The Secret (the book) made quite a stir when it came out in 2006. Unarguably one of the most read books in the Self-Help genre, the book has sold more than 19 million copies and was the center of discussion at the Bookoholics Meet this weekend.

The meet was hosted by Manav and the speakers for the meet were - Nazm, Dharmesh Sir, Nishant and Yogi.

The opinions ranged from 'it being law which has always existed - in religious books, science, culture, etc' to 'it being a sheer waste of time'. Nazm (who was talking to the group through the Skype call) and Nishant were both ardent supporters of the book and practice what has been preached in their real lives as well. Whereas Yogi and Dharmesh were in complete disagreement with the ideas being presented in the same.

As an audience we heard a full spectrum of views!

Manav - The host for the evening.

Manav - The host for the evening.

The individual views were followed by a group discussion in which everyone was invited and encouraged to present his/her views.

Rohan with his firm view that the whole "self-help" category of books are absolute trash!

Deepak Sir with his views that maybe not all but certain sections of society really need and are benefited by them.

And whole lot of views both for and against the book were presented and pondered on.

And as always the discussion kind of concluded with the conclusion that "If it works for you, let it. If it does not, let it be." :)

All in all such meets present a good opportunity for us to make use of all that grey matter inside our brains, gives us a few new thoughts to ponder over and a few new people to talk to :)

I look forward to the next one.

And with this blog, we want to keep the discussion going. So if you have any views of your own about The Secret, we would love for you to share it with us in the comment section below. And if you were present for the meet do tell us what were your take aways from the discussion. Looking forward to hearing from you :)

Prakash, the host of the evening for this meet started the meet with a little introduction to Bookoholics and what we do. And then invited Pinak and Arvind to share their experiences of the Mumbai Literature Festival which they had attended recently.

This was followed by the speakers taking the center stage one by one and presenting their monologues -

The variety in the presentations was refreshing. And also the good part was most of the speakers had specially prepared their talk for the meet. So their views/ideas in the form of their monologues was a treat to be had for all of us present as audience.

All the speakers were absolutely outstanding and were a delight to listen to. We also squeezed in a small segment where the audience had a chance to take the center stage and introduce themselves and tell us what they would want the next Bookoholics meet to be. Following are some happy pictures from this segment -

A fun meet all in all which adds the much needed variety to our #LifeInSurat :)

Already looking forward to the next meet.

Rahul.

PS: We are really thankful to VR Surat for providing us with the venue. The help extended by the VR team is really appreciated.
